CB Cares delivers 8K books to rebuild school library, 2K to local nonprofit

A drive launched on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to rebuild a school library in Philadelphia has resulted in a massive collection of 10,000 books. On Wednesday, September 21, local community organization CB Cares is delivering 80 cartons of reading materials to the Global Leadership Academy in West Philadelphia.

This past January the charter school was ravaged by a five-alarm fire. Although school was not in session, all learning and teaching materials were destroyed. Hearing of the devastation, CB Cares executive director Kimberly Cambra recognized an opportunity for central Bucks County students to lend a hand and make a big difference in others’ lives.

Cambra recruited Central Bucks East student Rachel Fryatt, who then pulled together her own team of student volunteers to spearhead the project. Putting designated receptacles into several Central Bucks elementary schools, the team urged students and families to donate books. Every other week until April, Rachel collected and counted the donations and delivered them to the collection site at the CB Cares office in Doylestown. Over the summer, Rachel and her team worked to organize and sort through the nearly 10,000 books they’d accumulated.

The 80 cartons for the Global Leadership Academy contain 8,000 kindergarten through 8th grade titles to restore the selection of reading materials for the library of the Global Leadership Academy. Fred Beans Family of Dealerships is providing transport to get the books to their destination.

Another 2,000 pre-k and baby books will be donated to Child Home & Community, a nonprofit whose goal is to ensure healthy births, enhance family stability and promote self-sufficiency for teen parents. Located in Doylestown, it serves Bucks and Montgomery counties.

CB Cares is a nonprofit community coalition whose goal is to promote positive values, attitudes and behaviors particularly in our community’s youth. The framework for all of CB Cares programs is the 40 Developmental Assets, a research-based approach to cultivating the most important qualities which create caring, competent and resilient individuals. This year, January’s Asset for the 10k book drive launch was Asset #9 “Service to Others”; April’s Asset #25 was “Reading for Pleasure.”

The Global Leadership Academy is at 4601 Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131.
