What is a Continuously Variable Transmission?
Technically, a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is an automatic transmission. However, unlike traditional automatic (or manual) transmissions, the CVT does not have a fixed number of gear ratios. This means that it can engage any number of gear ratios in order to accommodate your current driving conditions.
In order to achieve this gear ratio flexibility, CVT transmissions are designed with two opposing cone-shaped pulleys that are connected by a metal belt or chain that runs between them. This belt or chain acts like the chain you’d see on a bikes with gears.
One of these cones is attached to the engine, which is the input shaft, and the other cone is connected to the drive wheels, or the output shaft. The CVT changes gear ratios by moving the pulley closer together or farther apart which makes the belt or chain ride up and down the sides of the cone. This action increases and decreases the diameter of the pulley which changes the gear ratio.
How Does a CVT Differ from Other Transmissions?
While we already know how a CVT differs from other transmissions by not having a fixed number of gear ratios, you’ll find that they differ in a number of other ways, too. Unlike a manual transmission, you’ll have just two pedals: an accelerator and a brake as you would with an automatic transmission.
Also like an automatic transmission, a CVT doesn’t require you to shift from gear to gear by hand. However, unlike an automatic transmission, you won’t feel or hear the vehicle automatically switching gears. Its this aspect of the CVT that causes it to rev each time you accelerate.
