DETROIT – The Hyundai Elantra was named the 2012 North American Car of the Year, while the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque took the 2012 North American Truck of the Year title at the North American International Auto Show.
“I want to thank the 2,000 or so engineers who worked on this car,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, after the Elantra won the award. “We’ve sold 200,000 of these already.”
The Volkswagen Passat and Ford Focus were the other finalists for North American Car of the Year.
The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque won over finalists BMW X3 and the Honda CR-V.
A jury of 50 North American automotive journalists evaluated each of the new cars and trucks introduced last year in a series of votes that culminated in the NACTOY awards.
