Learn How to Service an Electric Vehicle in PA
If you drive an EV, you'll want to take a closer look at the different types of maintenance and service required. Electric vehicles don't have as many components as gasoline-powered vehicles, making them much easier and less expensive to maintain. In fact, EVs contain less than over two dozen mechanical components, avoiding gasoline-powered maintenance services like oil changes, transmission servicing, tune-ups, and more. Some technicians boast that electric vehicle drivers may spend a third of what conventional drivers will on routine maintenance.
That being said, an EV is not maintenance-free. You will want to have your electric vehicle routinely checked and maintained, giving you a better overall drive and keeping your vehicle as new as possible.

What Type of Routine Maintenance Does My EV Need?
Your electric vehicle requires many different regular maintenance services and repairs. Some of these include:
- Battery Maintenance - Most EV batteries have a life between 12 and 15 years. While there isn't a ton of maintenance you can do for the battery, there are some things you can do to prolong its life. A few examples include: don't fully charge or deplete the battery, don't use fast chargers all the time, and try to stay away from extreme temperatures (both hot and cold).
- Brake Services - The braking system for an EV is similar to that of a conventional vehicle. You'll want to check the brakes about once a year or whenever you notice one of the three brake red flags (shuddering, squealing, or a spongy brake pedal). If you live in a snowy area, like the Delaware Valley or Southeastern, PA, you'll want to inspect the brakes more often.
- Tire Services - One downside to an EV is that they tend to add extra weight onto the tires. Batteries can be heavy, which places more wear on your car's tires. Inspect the tires often to determine if they need to be replaced, and don't forget to have the tires regularly rotated. Tire rotations and changes ensure even wear and provide a more balanced overall drive. Because you drive around Pennsylvania and Philly Metro, you may want to switch between winter and summer tires for added grip.
- Windshield Care - Being able to see as you drive around Central, PA, Southeastern, PA, or beyond is key to having a successful trip. Make sure that your EV has a clear view by replacing any cracked windshield, keeping the windshield wiper fluid full, and having working windshield wipers always in place.
Seasonal EV Care to Consider
Besides the winter care services mentioned above, there are other seasonal services you should consider when driving an EV in a cold climate. Electric vehicles tend to lose about 20 to 30 percent of range during the winter. It's recommended to never let your battery get below 20 percent and take into account this dip in range.
